Amoeba (feat. Christie Staudhammer)

about

Amoeba was written in 1988 in a featureless, windowless room in the basement of the Santa Monica Maternity Hospital on the slopes of Lion's Head in Cape Town.
Confined to the room on weekend days and summer nights I was hidden from one of the world's most beautiful cities while the rest of the city played, beache'd & party'd. Inbetween the bloody mess that is the miracle of child-birth; having just read Richard Bach's 'Illusions' (look for the clues, I'll say no more!) and with the 8 year Cape Town era of my life drawing to a close, this song came together.
Christie sang this song a couple of times in the 1990's. In the final moments of her last cello take it occurred to me she should sing the song for this album. Surprise was the key. She would have refused if forewarned. As the last string was bowed Jim moved in for the mic adjustment. I casually placed the words into her hands saying something like "Just have one go for fun". The booth door closed and Jim hit the record button effectively muting Christie's protestations as the introduction swelled in her headphones. One take and it was done. I don't think she would have done it again if we'd asked her to and we didn't need to. It was history in the making to me.

Cape Town 1988

The sun above , sweet crystals below
Here we are community show
Holding on to certainty.

In your house , your prison of dreams
The shutters are closed to the swirling stream
The river runs wild above your head.

Don't worry if you feather your plans
And the feathers come off , then you hit land
For you have gained what you have seen.

Break away into the River of Chance
Lead your goals into another dance
Make them happen , make them win,
Make them fly.

Why waste it on the expected road?
You're coming along way from home
Blaze a trail on that distant shore
You're coming along way from home.

The left behind , wherever you turn,
They'll be watching you , but what have they learned?
They don't imagine that they can too.

Break away into the River of Chance
Lead your goals into another dance
Make them happen , make them win,
Make them fly.

Why waste it on the expected road?
You're coming along way from home
Blaze a trail on that distant shore
You're coming along way from home.
