about

Cold Nights. A simple alt-country tune. South Africa. 1983. Oblique and subtle enough to play during the dark days of disappearing people, the security police and "the total onslaught".
From the bank of political songs. South Africa deep in apartheid, student politics, years of unsubtle indoctrination & propaganda, conscription, thought crimes, detention without trial, detainees slipping on soap or "voluntarily" leaping from police station windows, domestic workers arrested and dragged away down driveways into police vans for having a child or husband staying over with them, finger-wagging politicians invoking the support of God for their atrocities and lecturing the world on morality, and finally, the politics of window dressing bolting from the barn and into the Light. Peace to the heroes too many to mention. I wish I'd done more.

COLD NIGHTS
Words&Music
Roger Seldon
Driekoppen 1983

Cold nights before the fire, watching the wood pile higher and higher
To the sky, which will burn forever and more.

You and me , we'll discover what it is to be a lover
Lost. In our hearts we did not care for all.

Golden hearts turned to coal,
Knowing that they're growing old.
Have to rise to free the soul
Now angry and striving to be filled.

Guiding lights burn in the fire , cannot see them as they tire,
Flickering and dying when we need them to be.

See for yourself the crystal ball . Deny your own sight or see it all
As clear and stark as a painting of war.

Golden hearts turned to coal,
Knowing that they're growing old.
Have to rise to free the soul
Now angry and striving to be filled.
