Just before leaving my country of birth I signed up to work as a ship's doctor. I thought it was to be a cruise ship, filled with style and festivity and the rich & famous and endless possibilities, visiting exotic locations.

It was a telecommunications maintenance ship. 180m of bright orange iron, bobbing around at sea for weeks on end fixing fibre-optic cables and gapping it between hurricanes Gabriel and Hugo to make it back to Southhampton from Baltimore before being caught on the wrong side of the Atlantic for the next job. There were some interesting styles alright, and great festivity to be had carousing with the 40 odd sailors, engineers and officers on board. And there's nothing on earth quite like the bars one finds walking distance from the wharf. Mostly, in fact almost entirely, there was nothing to do. I started writing a book. And I wrote this song - to the girl I'd left behind, the one you may have already come across in the song written the previous year, Track 1, Time Will Tell.
